International conference “Facing the Challenges of the Information Age: New Philosophies, Principles and Practices in American Studies and ELT” took place at Pomor State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) on March 16-18, 2010. An international conference “Facing the Challenges of the Information Age: New Philosophies, Principles and Practices in American Studies and ELT” took place at Pomor State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) on March 16-18, 2010. The event was sponsored by the US Consulate General in St. Petersburg. The participants of the conference were prominent scholars, university teachers, post-graduate students, students and school teachers from Arkhangelsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Cherepovets, Vologda, Murmansk and Syktyvkar. It was the joint event of several faculties of Pomor State University (the Faculty of Foreign Languages, the Faculty of History and others) which included the following sessions:
“Cross-Culture Issues in American Studies and ELT”;
“New Historical Context and Methods of Teaching American Studies”;
“Applied Linguistics and Teaching English in the Information Age”;
“Multimedia Resources and Technologies in American Studies and ELT”;
“Multiple Competences (Information, Media, Visual, Digital, etc.) for the XXI century”.
The topics of presentations ranged from the turbulent history of “Russia and the West” relations in the post-Soviet period and cultural stereotypes in Russian and American advertising to the use of IT technologies in American Studies and English language teaching.
Workshops for university and school teachers “On Not Teaching Culture: Giving Students Tools for a Future without Borders” and “Written Corrective Feedback: How to Respond to Student Writing” were conducted by Senior English Language Fellow John Mark King (St. Petersburg).
The conference ended with a literatury party “Love is not All” devoted to love poetry by American authors of XVII-XXI centuries.
The event was organized in the framework of the American Studies program launched several years ago at Pomor State University and was aimed at supporting the academic staff involved in teaching American Studies and the English language in their effort to gain new knowledge, exchange ideas and integrate new interactive methods in the teaching process. It contributed greatly to developing cooperation within the academic community of Russia and gaining new expertise in the sphere of American Studies and teaching English.
