Umbrella Newsletter # 37

Dear Colleagues,

This Newsletter, which is being compiled on the eve of Women’s Day, was inspired by a quotation from Michael Krauss’ article http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/permweb2009/nativesgettingrestless.html in which he refers to Benno’s interesting story about “a college student in an airport with an iPod and a set of white earphones. He asked, "What are you listening to?" And the student replied, "Which ear?" It seems that the student had an iPod in each pocket. She was listening to music on one of them and to a chemistry lecture on the other. "It helps me get in the zone," she explained. Michael writes that this story illustrates “that certain uses of technology that may be hidden to us, or seem foreign to us, seem perfectly natural and perhaps even common among our students.” To me that story was another proof of how talented women are and how they can do many things at the same time. Yes, we have to make huge strides to catch up with “digital natives of today” and we say “Kudos!” to many colleagues who fearlessly master DSL (digital second language) and believe that even heavy DSL accent is better than no DSL at all. This Newsletter is compiled out of your contributions.

Happy March 8th!

Elena
